The Omega Speedmaster: The History and References Behind the Moonwatch
Few watches have a story as extraordinary as the Omega Speedmaster.
Introduced in 1957 as a motorsport chronograph, the Speedmaster was never originally designed for astronauts.
It was built for speed.
Its tachymeter scale moved from the dial to the bezel, making it easier for drivers to calculate speed over distance. Its chronograph layout was clean, highly legible and functional.

1957: The Birth of the Speedmaster
The Omega Speedmaster was introduced in 1957 as part of what collectors now call Omega's:
Professional Trilogy.
Alongside the Speedmaster came the:

Railmaster.
Each watch had a different purpose.
The Seamaster 300 was created for diving.
The Railmaster was designed for professionals working around magnetic fields.

Why the External Tachymeter Was Important
Chronographs existed long before the Speedmaster.
But Omega did something important with the layout.

The First Omega in Space
In 1962, astronaut Wally Schirra wore his personal Omega Speedmaster CK2998 during the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission.
This made the Speedmaster one of the earliest Omega watches worn in space.
Importantly, this wasn't yet an official NASA-issued Speedmaster.
Schirra had purchased the watch privately.

NASA Needed a Watch
By the early 1960s, NASA needed a wrist chronograph suitable for manned space missions.
