The Heritage of Rolex: The Story Behind the World’s Most Famous Watchmaker

Few names carry as much weight in watchmaking as Rolex.

For more than a century, the company has created watches that have travelled to the summit of Mount Everest, descended into the deepest parts of the ocean, crossed continents with professional pilots and become inseparable from motorsport, diving and exploration.

Today, models such as the Submariner, Daytona, GMT-Master, Explorer and Datejust are recognised far beyond the world of watch collecting.

But Rolex's reputation wasn't built purely through luxury or marketing.

At the heart of the company is a remarkably consistent philosophy: create reliable wristwatches, improve them continuously and prove their capabilities in the real world.

From Hans Wilsdorf's early experiments with the wristwatch to the modern Cosmograph Daytona, this is the heritage of Rolex.

The Beginning: Hans Wilsdorf and the Wristwatch

The Rolex story began in 1905, when Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis established Wilsdorf & Davis in London.

At the time, pocket watches still dominated.

Wristwatches existed, but they weren't always taken seriously. Many were small, delicate and considered less accurate than traditional pocket watches.

Wilsdorf saw things differently.

He believed the wristwatch could become practical, precise and elegant enough for everyday use.

The challenge was creating movements small enough to fit comfortably on the wrist without sacrificing accuracy.

Wilsdorf sourced high-quality Swiss movements and began developing watches that could demonstrate that the wristwatch wasn't merely fashionable.

It could be a serious precision instrument.

The Birth of the Rolex Name

In 1908, Hans Wilsdorf registered the name Rolex.

The origins of the word have generated plenty of theories over the years, but Wilsdorf wanted something short, memorable and easy to pronounce in different languages.

It also needed to look good on a watch dial.

Rolex achieved all of those things.

The name gradually began appearing more prominently on the company's watches, eventually replacing the various retailer and distributor names commonly printed on watch dials during the period.

A global watch brand was beginning to take shape.

Precision Before Prestige

Before Rolex became synonymous with luxury, Wilsdorf concentrated heavily on accuracy.

In 1910, a Rolex wristwatch received a Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision from the Official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne.

Four years later, a Rolex wristwatch received a Class A precision certificate from Kew Observatory in Britain.

This was significant because such recognition had traditionally been associated with larger marine chronometers and pocket watches.

Rolex was demonstrating that a small wristwatch could achieve serious levels of accuracy.

It established an idea that would remain fundamental to the company:

A Rolex shouldn't simply look impressive.

It should perform.

1926: The Oyster Changes the Wristwatch

One of the most important moments in Rolex history arrived in 1926.

Rolex introduced the Oyster case, creating a wristwatch case designed to protect the movement from water and dust.

The concept relied on a hermetically sealed construction incorporating a screw-down caseback, bezel and winding crown.

Water resistance was an enormous challenge for early wristwatches.

Dust, moisture and humidity could quickly damage delicate mechanical movements.

The Oyster offered a solution.

But Hans Wilsdorf understood that claiming a watch was waterproof wasn't enough.

He needed to prove it.

Mercedes Gleitze and the English Channel

In 1927, British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze attempted to swim across the English Channel while wearing a Rolex Oyster.

The watch was attached to her during the swim and remained operational after hours in the cold seawater.

Wilsdorf recognised the publicity potential immediately.

Rolex promoted the achievement extensively, including advertisements celebrating the Oyster's performance.

The event established a marketing philosophy Rolex would use repeatedly over the following century:

Don't simply describe what a watch can do. Put it into the environment it was designed to survive.

Explorers, racing drivers, pilots, divers and athletes would eventually become part of that philosophy.

1931: The Perpetual Rotor

Water resistance solved one problem.

Automatic winding helped solve another.

Every time a manually wound watch was operated, the crown needed to be unscrewed or manipulated. For a water-resistant watch, reducing unnecessary interaction with the crown could help maintain the integrity of the case.

In 1931, Rolex patented a self-winding mechanism featuring a freely rotating oscillating weight.

Rolex called it the Perpetual rotor.

Movement of the wearer's wrist caused the rotor to rotate and wind the mainspring automatically.

The combination of the waterproof Oyster case and automatic Perpetual movement became fundamental to Rolex.

Even today, the words Oyster Perpetual appear across much of the company's collection.

1945: The Datejust

To celebrate Rolex's 40th anniversary, the company introduced one of its most influential watches:

the Datejust.

Launched in 1945, the Datejust combined Rolex's waterproof Oyster case and automatic movement with a date window positioned at three o'clock.

The date changed automatically rather than requiring the wearer to manually advance it each day.

Later, Rolex added the Cyclops magnifying lens above the date window — a feature that became one of the company's most recognisable design signatures.

The Datejust wasn't created for diving, racing or exploration.

Instead, it established the template for the modern everyday luxury Rolex.

Elegant enough for formal occasions but robust enough for daily wear, that formula remains remarkably successful more than 80 years later.

Rolex and the Summit of Everest

During the first half of the 20th century, Rolex increasingly associated its watches with exploration.

One of the company's greatest moments came in 1953.

On 29 May, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest.

Rolex watches had accompanied members of the expedition.

The achievement became closely connected with the development and promotion of the Rolex Explorer, which emerged during this period.

The Explorer stripped the wristwatch back to its essentials.

Its highly legible dial, robust Oyster case and famous 3-6-9 layout created one of the simplest designs Rolex has ever produced.

It was a watch built around readability and reliability.

That simplicity is precisely why the Explorer remains so appealing today.

1953: The Submariner Arrives

Around the same period, Rolex was developing another professional watch.

This one would become arguably the most famous dive watch ever made.

The Rolex Submariner was developed during the early 1950s and officially presented in 1954.

Its purpose was straightforward:

provide divers with a robust, water-resistant wristwatch capable of measuring time underwater.

The rotating bezel allowed the wearer to monitor elapsed dive time, while luminous hands and hour markers provided visibility in dark conditions.

Early Submariners established a design formula that has changed surprisingly little.

Black dial.

Rotating bezel.

Large luminous markers.

Mercedes hour hand.

Oyster case.

The design became so influential that it effectively established the visual language of the modern dive watch.

The Submariner Becomes an Icon

The Submariner's reputation grew rapidly.

Professional divers used it.

Military organisations adopted versions of it.

Explorers wore it.

And then James Bond arrived.

Sean Connery famously wore Rolex Submariners during the early James Bond films, helping transform the professional diving watch into a cultural icon.

Over subsequent decades, the Submariner evolved with:

  • crown guards,

  • increased water resistance,

  • date complications,

  • improved movements,

  • sapphire crystals,

  • and ceramic bezels.

Yet the basic appearance remained unmistakably familiar.

Few watches demonstrate Rolex's evolutionary design philosophy better.

1955: The GMT-Master and the Jet Age

The 1950s weren't only about exploring mountains and oceans.

Commercial aviation was changing the world.

Long-distance flights allowed pilots to cross multiple time zones in a single journey, creating demand for a watch capable of displaying more than one time zone.

Rolex developed the GMT-Master in collaboration with Pan American World Airways.

The watch featured an additional 24-hour hand and rotating 24-hour bezel, allowing pilots to track another time zone.

The original red-and-blue bezel became known among collectors as the Pepsi bezel.

The GMT-Master became one of the defining watches of the jet age.

Today, the GMT-Master II remains one of Rolex's most desirable models.

But underneath the luxury status is a genuinely practical professional-watch concept.

It was created because pilots needed it.

1956: The Day-Date

Rolex's professional watches were becoming increasingly famous, but the company was simultaneously developing watches at the opposite end of the spectrum.

In 1956, Rolex introduced the Day-Date.

The watch displayed both the date and the day of the week written in full across the dial.

Crucially, the Day-Date was produced exclusively in precious metals.

Its association with political leaders, business figures and influential personalities eventually earned it the nickname:

The President.

The Day-Date demonstrated another side of Rolex.

The same company building rugged watches for divers and explorers could also create one of the ultimate symbols of luxury and success.

The Deep Sea Special

Rolex's obsession with water resistance didn't end with the Submariner.

In 1960, Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh descended into the Mariana Trench aboard the bathyscaphe Trieste.

Attached to the exterior of the vessel was an experimental Rolex watch known as the Deep Sea Special.

The bathyscaphe reached the bottom of the Challenger Deep at a depth of almost 11,000 metres.

The Rolex survived.

After the dive, Rolex received confirmation that the watch had performed successfully despite experiencing extraordinary pressure.

It was one of the most extreme demonstrations of mechanical watch durability ever attempted.

Decades later, Rolex would return to the deepest parts of the ocean.

1963: The Cosmograph Daytona

Rolex's connection with motorsport produced another legendary watch.

In 1963, the company introduced the Cosmograph reference 6239.

The watch featured a chronograph designed for measuring elapsed time and a tachymeter scale positioned on the bezel.

The name Daytona soon became associated with the collection, referencing the famous Daytona International Speedway in Florida.

Initially, the Daytona wasn't the impossible-to-buy status symbol it is today.

Vintage examples could once sit unsold in dealers' windows.

Then came Paul Newman.

Paul Newman and the Daytona

Actor and racing driver Paul Newman became closely associated with a distinctive version of the Rolex Daytona featuring what collectors now call an "exotic dial."

Newman's personal watch became one of the most famous individual wristwatches in history.

His association with the Daytona helped transform previously overlooked dial variations into some of the most desirable vintage watches ever made.

In 2017, Paul Newman's own Rolex Daytona sold at auction for $17.75 million.

The sale demonstrated just how dramatically the perception of vintage Rolex had changed.

A functional racing chronograph had become a cultural artefact.

The Sea-Dweller and Professional Diving

As professional diving moved deeper, Rolex developed an even more specialised watch.

The Sea-Dweller emerged during the 1960s through Rolex's relationship with professional saturation divers.

Saturation diving created an unusual problem.

Helium molecules could enter a watch during prolonged periods inside pressurised diving environments. During decompression, trapped gas could expand and potentially force the crystal away from the case.

Rolex developed the helium escape valve to allow excess gas to leave the watch safely.

The Sea-Dweller became one of the ultimate professional diving watches.

It looked similar to a Submariner, but its engineering was designed around a very different level of underwater use.

The Explorer II

In 1971, Rolex introduced the Explorer II.

Unlike the original Explorer, this watch was designed with cave explorers and other professionals operating in environments where distinguishing day from night could become difficult.

The Explorer II featured a prominent 24-hour hand and fixed 24-hour bezel.

Early reference 1655 examples have developed a particularly strong collector following.

Later versions evolved into capable travel watches with independently adjustable hour hands, giving the Explorer II a distinct position within the Rolex professional collection.

It remains one of the more understated Rolex sports watches.

Rolex and the Quartz Era

Rolex is famous for mechanical watches, but the company wasn't completely absent from the quartz revolution.

In 1977, Rolex introduced the Oysterquartz.

Rather than simply placing a generic quartz movement inside an existing case, Rolex developed distinctive quartz watches with angular cases and integrated bracelets.

The Oysterquartz Datejust and Day-Date remained in production for decades, although in relatively modest numbers.

Today, these watches represent one of the most unusual chapters in Rolex history.

They also demonstrate that even a company strongly associated with mechanical tradition wasn't afraid to experiment with new technology.

The Yacht-Master and a Different Kind of Professional Rolex

In 1992, Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master.

While visually related to the Submariner, the Yacht-Master wasn't intended to replace it.

Instead, it offered a more luxurious interpretation of Rolex's nautical heritage.

Precious metals, polished surfaces and distinctive bezel treatments created a watch that felt equally suited to the deck of a yacht and a luxury resort.

The collection later expanded to include the technically ambitious Yacht-Master II, developed around a programmable regatta countdown chronograph.

It showed how Rolex could take its professional-watch philosophy in a more specialised direction.

Rolex Returns to the Deep

More than 50 years after the Trieste expedition, Rolex returned to the Mariana Trench.

In 2012, filmmaker and explorer James Cameron completed a solo descent to the Challenger Deep aboard the Deepsea Challenger.

Attached to the exterior was an experimental Rolex dive watch, the Deepsea Challenge.

Once again, the watch survived enormous underwater pressure.

The project eventually influenced a production Rolex Deepsea Challenge capable of extraordinary water resistance.

From the Oyster of 1926 to modern ultra-deep diving watches, water resistance has remained one of the clearest threads running through Rolex history.

Evolution Rather Than Revolution

One of the most interesting things about Rolex is how slowly its watches change.

Compare a modern Submariner with one from the 1960s and the relationship is immediately obvious.

The same is true of the:

  • Explorer,

  • GMT-Master,

  • Datejust,

  • Day-Date,

  • and Daytona.

Rolex rarely abandons a successful design.

Instead, it improves it.

Movements become more efficient.

Cases become stronger.

Bracelets become more substantial.

Water resistance improves.

Materials evolve.

Ceramic replaces aluminium.

Modern hairsprings and escapements improve performance.

But the fundamental identity of the watch remains intact.

This evolutionary approach is one of the reasons Rolex watches are so recognisable.

Understanding Rolex means understanding the models that built its reputation.

Oyster Perpetual — The purest expression of Rolex's waterproof automatic wristwatch philosophy.

Modern Rolex is inevitably associated with success, wealth and luxury.

That reputation can sometimes obscure what made the company famous in the first place.

Rolex built its identity around practical problems.

How do you wind it without constantly using the crown?

How does a pilot track two time zones?

How does a diver measure elapsed time underwater?

How does a saturation diver protect a watch during decompression?

How do you build a wristwatch capable of surviving extreme environments?

The heritage of Rolex is ultimately the story of making the wristwatch more capable.

Hans Wilsdorf believed in the wristwatch at a time when many people still considered the pocket watch superior.

Rolex then spent the following century proving what a watch worn on the wrist could withstand.

Across oceans.

Up mountains.

Through the skies.

Around racing circuits.

And into the deepest parts of the planet.

Along the way, watches designed as functional instruments became some of the most recognisable luxury objects ever created.

That transformation is what makes Rolex's heritage so fascinating.

The Submariner wasn't originally created to become a status symbol.

It was created for divers.

The GMT-Master wasn't created because collectors wanted a colourful bezel.

It was created for pilots crossing time zones.

The Daytona wasn't created to break auction records.

It was created to time racing cars.

And the Explorer wasn't created to sit inside a safe.

It was built around exploration.

More than a century after Hans Wilsdorf began challenging conventional ideas about the wristwatch, Rolex continues to follow essentially the same philosophy:

build a watch for a purpose, make it exceptionally well, and let its reputation follow.
