For more than 140 years, Breitling has built watches around a simple principle: instruments for professionals. The Beginning: Léon Breitling and the Chronograph
The Breitling story began in 1884, when 24-year-old Léon Breitling established a workshop in Saint-Imier, Switzerland.
From the beginning, Breitling specialised in chronographs, timers and precision measuring instruments.

While many Swiss manufacturers concentrated on conventional pocket watches, Breitling recognised growing demand for accurate timing equipment. Industry, science and competitive sport were developing rapidly, and being able to accurately measure short periods of time was becoming increasingly important.

As the company grew, Léon Breitling moved operations to La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1892, placing the business at the heart of Switzerland's watchmaking industry.
Gaston Breitling and the Independent Chronograph Pusher
Following Léon Breitling's death, his son Gaston took control of the company.
Under Gaston's leadership, Breitling continued developing the chronograph.
One of the company's most significant developments arrived in 1915, when Breitling introduced a wrist chronograph featuring an independent pusher positioned above the crown.
Previously, chronograph functions were commonly controlled through the winding crown.
Separating the chronograph control made the watch significantly easier to operate.
Breitling continued refining the concept, and by the 1930s the company had helped establish the familiar chronograph layout involving separate pushers for starting, stopping and resetting the timer.
It was an important step toward the modern chronograph we recognise today.
Breitling Takes to the Skies
As aviation developed during the first half of the 20th century, Breitling found the perfect environment for its precision instruments.
Pilots required reliable methods of measuring elapsed time, calculating speed and navigating increasingly complex flight routes.
Breitling began supplying onboard chronographs and cockpit instruments for aircraft, strengthening a connection with aviation that would eventually become inseparable from the brand.
During the 1930s and 1940s, Breitling's reputation for aviation instrumentation continued to grow.
But the watch that would define this relationship had yet to arrive.
1952: The Birth of the Navitimer
In 1952, Breitling introduced what would become one of the most recognisable pilot's watches ever created:
The Navitimer.
The concept was ingenious.
Breitling combined a chronograph with a circular slide rule, allowing pilots to perform essential calculations directly from their wrist.
Depending on the calculation, a pilot could determine information relating to:
speed,
distance,
fuel consumption,
rate of climb or descent,
and unit conversions.
This wasn't merely an aviation-inspired luxury watch.
It was effectively a mechanical flight computer.

Breitling Goes Underwater
Aviation may dominate Breitling's heritage, but the brand also has serious diving credentials.
In 1957, Breitling introduced the Superocean.
The collection was created during the golden age of recreational and professional diving, when manufacturers including Rolex, Blancpain and Omega were developing increasingly capable underwater watches.
Breitling's answer combined serious water resistance with the company's expertise in chronographs and sporting instruments.
The Superocean would eventually develop into one of Breitling's most important collections.

Motorsport and the Breitling Top Time

In 1964, Breitling introduced the Top Time.

The Top Time even gained a connection to James Bond when a modified Breitling Top Time appeared on Sean Connery's wrist in the 1965 film Thunderball.

The Race to Build an Automatic Chronograph
By the end of the 1960s, several manufacturers were competing to solve one of watchmaking's biggest technical challenges:
creating a commercially viable automatic chronograph.
Breitling joined forces with Heuer-Leonidas, movement specialist Büren and Dubois Dépraz on what became known as Project 99.
The resulting Chrono-Matic Calibre 11 debuted in 1969.
It was one of the world's first automatic chronograph movements and represented an important moment in mechanical watchmaking history.
Breitling used the technology in several watches, including distinctive Chrono-Matic models that have since become highly collectible.
From the Cockpit to Space
Breitling's aviation story eventually extended beyond Earth's atmosphere.
On 24 May 1962, astronaut Scott Carpenter orbited Earth aboard Aurora 7 while wearing a specially developed Breitling Navitimer.
Carpenter had requested a 24-hour dial because conventional day and night cycles become meaningless while orbiting Earth.
Breitling responded by producing the Cosmonaute, a Navitimer capable of displaying all 24 hours of the day on a single rotation of the hour hand.
It became one of the earliest Swiss wristwatches worn in space and added another remarkable chapter to Breitling's aviation heritage.
The Quartz Crisis and a New Beginning
Like much of the traditional Swiss watch industry, Breitling faced enormous pressure during the quartz crisis of the 1970s.
In 1979, the original Breitling company ceased operations.
However, that wasn't the end of the name.
Swiss entrepreneur and watchmaker Ernest Schneider, who had experience as a pilot, acquired the Breitling trademarks and revived the company.
Under Schneider's leadership, Breitling rebuilt its identity around aviation, technical performance and professional instruments.
This period produced watches that would define another generation of the brand.
The Chronomat and Breitling's Revival
One of the most important watches of Breitling's modern revival arrived in 1984.
The redesigned Chronomat was developed in connection with the Frecce Tricolori, the Italian Air Force's aerobatic demonstration team.
Its appearance was unmistakably Breitling.
Large rider tabs positioned around the bezel improved usability while wearing gloves, while the robust case and chronograph layout emphasised functionality.
The Chronomat helped establish the bold aesthetic that became synonymous with Breitling throughout the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s.
It also demonstrated something important:
Breitling could evolve without abandoning its instrument-watch philosophy.
Emergency: A Watch That Could Save Your Life
Perhaps no Breitling better represents the phrase "instruments for professionals" than the Emergency.
Introduced in the 1990s, the watch incorporated a miniature emergency distress transmitter.
Designed primarily for pilots and adventurers, the transmitter could be activated during an emergency to help rescuers locate the wearer.
Later generations significantly advanced the concept, including technology designed to work with international satellite-based search-and-rescue infrastructure.
The Emergency was unlike almost anything else produced by a mainstream luxury watch manufacturer.
It wasn't simply inspired by professional equipment.
It was professional equipment.
Breitling Enters the Manufacture Movement Era
For much of its history, Breitling had relied on specialist Swiss movement manufacturers — a completely normal practice within the traditional watch industry.
That changed dramatically in 2009 with the introduction of the Breitling Manufacture Calibre 01.
The automatic chronograph movement represented a major investment in Breitling's manufacturing capabilities.
Among its key characteristics were a column-wheel chronograph mechanism, vertical clutch and approximately 70 hours of power reserve.
The B01 became the foundation for an expanding family of Breitling manufacture movements and helped reposition the company for a new generation of collectors.
Breitling Today
Modern Breitling looks noticeably different from the brand many collectors remember from the early 2000s.
Its watches have generally become more refined, its historic catalogue has been rediscovered, and collections such as the Navitimer, Chronomat, Superocean and Top Time increasingly reference important designs from Breitling's archives.
